Meet Collen Makaza

Collen returned after dealing with an injury sustained during Soweto Marathon in November 2010, fitter, faster and more determined than ever to take gold!   His friend and former teammate Stephen Muzhingi, who he paced during 2009 enabling Stephen to take the Comrades Gold, and Collen battled it out to the bitter end, when finally only about 30 seconds separated 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions...

Grabbing Gold at Two Oceans Marathon, Collen Makaza, Former 50KM IAU World Champ

Collen's return from injury for Two Oceans Marathon, Cape Town, 7 April 2012, did not disappoint. The fast and furious finish in adverse weather conditions saw friend Stephen Muzhingi take the lead after a headstrong battle, with fellow countryman Henry Moyo overtaking Collen in the stadium to take 2nd position by 10 seconds. Collen finished an exceptionally strong 3rd position. Congratulations! You made your country, friends and colleagues proud!

Top International Contenders at Two Oceans Marathon

The ‘who's who’ in ultra running will be lining up in a few short hours, to compete in The Two Oceans Marathon, in what has become somewhat of an annual ‘curtain raiser’ to the Comrades Marathon. This is the race where many will test their readiness to compete in the Ultimate Human Race on 02 June 2012.

Husqvarna South Africa has put their weight behind some of the top contenders this year in a partnership with Craig Fry, international athlete manager, and is powering contenders such as John Birgen, Collen Makaza and Munyaradzi Jari.

John Birgen, Kenya, is the second fastest marathon runner on paper in the field. Birgen has run 2H09 on three occasions, and has won races across Europe and is an experienced racer. He has spent the past seven months in South Africa, training specifically for the 56km run around the mountain. He has the potential to smash records if the conditions are right.

Collen Makaza of Zimbabwe is the 2010 IAU 50km World Champion. Collen has a best finish at Two Oceans of 11th in 2010, but went on to capture the World Title a few months later. He has a PB marathon of 2H14, and holds the record for the fastest time to Half Way at Comrades Marathon, which he achieved in 2009. Due to an injury he sustained at the 2011 Two Oceans race, Collen had a seven-month resting period, but is back to his best form and is expected to perform well.

Munyaradzi Jari, affectionately known as Munya or Munya95, is a definite force to be reckoned with at the half marathon come Saturday morning. A seasoned campaigner at only 22 years old, he not only has breath-taking stamina from running Ultra races and is coming off running Hong Kong marathon earlier this year, he has the lightning speed to go with it. His last two races at 21km - the Pietermaritzburg half, 1st (67:18) and Paulpietersburg 4th (63:49) – have ensured that he is peaking at the right time and one can expect him to run sub 63 this Saturday.
